Thanks to a report from Mark Gurman, we learn that Apple's testing of the next Mac Pro is well underway, and the specs we should expect this next entry to have are absolutely insane… Let's discuss !
In Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, he details Apple's current plans for the upcoming Mac Pro – that the original idea was that it was already out , but due to changes in chip manufacturing and general production plans, the Mac Pro we've all been waiting for he was late
Fortunately, these delays are working in our favor, because the Mac Pro we're now waiting for is on a different level entirely thanks to being equipped with a new M2 Ultra chip, per Mark:
The M2 Ultra chip is meant to have some serious specs for professional users, including up to 24 CPU cores, 76 graphics cores and the ability to populate the machine with at least 192 gigabytes of memory.
Mark Gurman
These specifications are absolutely absurd. We last heard Mark talk about this general configuration at the end of October, but man… it's really something. To think that this was only a planned configuration and that another faster option was originally planned with an “M2 Extreme” chipset on offer:
An M2 Extreme chip would have doubled that to 48 CPU cores and 152 graphics cores. But here's the bad news: The company has likely done away with this high-end configuration, which may disappoint Apple's most demanding users — the photographers, editors, and developers who prize that kind of computing power.
Mark Gurman
Understandably, Apple decided to phase out the higher-end M2 Extreme option due to an M2 Extreme configured Mac Pro costing around $10,000 USD without any other upgrades. That's a lot of money, which Apple decided wasn't worth the limited sales numbers compared to the engineering and manufacturing costs.
However, this change in designs will undoubtedly be a boon to consumers, because keeping the new Mac Pro in Apple's standard M2 Ultra structure will allow for very important, more affordable features: easy expandability for memory, storage and other components .
Things are looking promising for the new Mac Pro. Unfortunately, Mark couldn't provide any deeper insight into the potential release, but signs point to a general date of 2023.
Apple, it's time to get a new Mac Pro in our faces. The previous Intel-based Mac Pro is still being sold, but with the rise of Apple's silicon, there's no way you're wasting your time on this old, rugged cheese grater.
